Euroclasses in Structural Waterproofing

The Euroclass system serves as a unifying benchmark across EU countries to maintain fire safety standards. It systematically classifies products into seven distinct fire reaction categories, starting from A1 and extending to F.  The classification is determined based on a set of defined tests or a combination thereof, with F denoting the highest combustibility level.

This system offers an extra layer of categorisation, usually linked with fire reaction classes (ranging from D to B).  It evaluates two key aspects: smoke production and flaming droplets or particles.  For smoke production, the classification ranges from s1 (minimal or no smoke) to s3 (considerable smoke).  Meanwhile, the scale for flaming droplets or particles goes from d0 (zero presence) to d2 (significant presence).  This information is crucial for understanding the potential hazards and safety measures required in the event of a fire.

The BS EN 13501-1 is a fire classification system specifically designed for construction products and building elements. It’s this classification that allows specific products to obtain the CE mark. Initially released as BS EN 13501-1:2007+A1:2009, it underwent an update in 2018. The classification plays a crucial role in maintaining safety standards within the construction industry.

The Euroclass systems standard for assessing construction products, employs five different tests. This approach ensures thorough and reliable evaluation of these materials.  This information is essential for professionals in the construction industry to make informed decisions on product selection.

These tests are:

  • Single-flame source test / ignitability test – BS EN ISO 11925-2: 2020
  • Single burning item (SBI) test – BS EN 13823: 2020
  • Non-combustibility test – BS EN ISO 1182: 2019
  • Determination of the burning behaviour using a radiant heat source – ISO 9239-1:2010 Reaction to fire tests for floorings Part 1
  • Determination of the gross heat of combustion (calorific value)) – EN ISO 1716: 2018

Structural waterproofing products

Waterproofing products are integral components within the construction industry, however, their correct and effective application remains a mystery to many.  These products play a pivotal role in various construction projects, enhancing the longevity of multiple surfaces. Understanding the appropriate use of these materials in the corresponding areas is crucial for the success of any construction endeavor.

British Standard 8102:2022 Protection of below ground structures against water ingress. Code of practice. provides valuable recommendations and guidance on how to prevent water from the surrounding ground from entering a structure at below-ground level. It categorizes waterproofing protection into three distinct types:

  • Type A (Barrier) Protection
  • Type B (Structurally Integral) Protection
  • Type C (Drained) Protection
