Design, Specification and Installation

Waterproofing design is a crucial aspect of any construction project. It involves the implementation of various methods and materials to prevent water from penetrating a building or structure. This field requires a deep understanding of both construction and the physical properties of water. It’s a phenomenal discipline, as efficient waterproofing design can significantly increase the longevity of a building and protect it from potential water damages.

Three key stages to successful waterproofing: design, specification, and installation.

Firstly, the design stage.  Designing a waterproof structure entails intricate planning and execution, which has evolved beyond the scope of traditional architectural duties. This shift underlines the significance of specialised knowledge in waterproofing design.  Ensuring the correctness of the design before the commencement of construction can lead to substantial cost savings.

In the latest Standard, BS 8102:2022, specifically in section 4.2 titled “Design Team”, there are significant insights and guidelines. This section provides valuable information that can shape the way design teams operate and innovate. It’s a must-read for those in the field, ensuring they’re up to date with the most recent standards and practices.

“A waterproofing specialist should be appointed as part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created. The waterproofing specialist should:

  • be suitably qualified and experienced, commensurate with the type and size of the proposed project
  • be capable of devising solutions that accommodate the various project constraints and needs with an understanding of construction forms and sequencing
  • provide the design team with information and guidance that assists with and influences the design, installation and future maintenance of the waterproofed structure”

The Waterproofing Design Specialist, as per BS 8102:2022, needs to possess a variety of expertise. Firstly, they should be knowledgeable about different waterproofing systems. In addition, they must have an in-depth understanding of the BS 8102 requirements.  It’s important for them to understand the sources of water, how it interacts with the structure, and its flow through the soil. Furthermore, they should have enough structural knowledge to engage meaningfully with a structural engineer. Lastly, they need adequate geotechnical knowledge to interpret a soil report and communicate effectively with a Geotechnical Engineer.

The specification stage follows, a waterproofing specification, or spec, is a detailed written document that outlines the requirements for a waterproofing solution:

  • Scope of work: The project’s scope, from start to finish
  • Materials: The materials required for the project
  • Installation: The methods for installing the materials
  • Quality: The quality standards for the project
  • Timeline: The project’s timeline and milestones
  • Safety: The national and state safety standards to meet

Specifications are usually created by architects, engineers, or designers, and are often included in the contractual documentation for contractors. They can also be part of the handover information for the project.

Our team of experts specialises in crafting detailed and precise specifications in-house. This team is dedicated to ensuring the utmost quality and accuracy in every project we undertake. This focus allows us to meet and surpass client expectations consistently.  From CSSW Reports to NBS Chorus.  NBS Chorus signifies a shift in the way data is managed and utilised. NBS Chorus, a cloud-based platform, offers enhanced features such as collaborative working, increased efficiency, and robust data management. This propels us into a modern era of digital information handling.

Finally, the installation stage brings the design to life, ensuring it meets the outlined specifications. Through this comprehensive approach, we ensure each project is meticulously planned and executed.
